Spencer Matthew has been crowned the ski jump champion after beating Louis Smith, Amy Willerton and Jason Robinson in a dramatic finale.
Spencer won with 18.98 metres, setting a new series record and beating Olympic gymnast and show favourite, Louis who jumped 18.05 metres, with Jason Robinson in third place with 16.35 metres. Amy Willerton was disqualified due to falling before the qualifying line. Emma Parker-Bowles, Lydia Bright and Kadeena Cox were also competing in the final but were knocked out earlier in the evening.
Spencer told host, Davina McCall: “I’m so happy. I did everything I could to win. Louis was always the man I wanted to beat.”
This series has been the most dangerous yet with fellow contestant Vogue Williams forced to pull out before the show even began. The model suffered a leg injury that made her unable to participate in the competition. Just a few weeks later, Sir Bradley Wiggins left the show due to a fracture in his knee. These weren’t the only contestants not to continue with the show, with former contestant Caprice also leaving The Jump after suffering from a “mystery illness” and Gareth Thomas leaving just a few weeks later due to “personal reasons.” Gareth was replaced with TOWIE star, Lydia Bright.
Former contestant, comedian Mark Dolan previously backed Spencer and Louis for the win saying: “Louis has the application, the discipline and of course he’s very flexible and supple. And he’s a very good student. But what Spencer has is a brazen disregard for danger. Spencer is fearless. He’s an adrenaline junkie. He’s the only one in the group that actually enjoys this madness and I think that natural courage and appetite for risk will serve him very well.”
