The Oscars did not disappoint last night with another year of one of the most highly-anticipated film events of the year, showcasing award winners for the best films of the year. The awards bash was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California with popular Late night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel hosting for the evening. Popular film La La Land had an impressive fourteen nominations, including Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and in turn, took home six awards.
Also taking home awards last night was Mahershala Ali, becoming the first Muslim to win an Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in Moonlight, Emma Stone winning a gong for best actress for her role in La La Land, Casey Affleck winning an award for best actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea, as well as Damien Chazelle winning best director for La La Land.
American singer Sara Bareilles took to the stage to perform as the tributes section were screened at this year’s ceremony. Sara sang an emotional version of Both Sides Now at the show which wowed the audience.
Perhaps the biggest mix-up in Oscars history also took place last night when La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner of Best Picture award. Bonnie and Clyde duo, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway took to the stage to announce La La Land as the winner. However, as the stage filled with more stars of the hit film such as Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and producers Fred Berger and Marc Platt who began their acceptance speeches, the audience learned that Moonlight had in fact won the award.
Producer Jordan Horowitz then appeared and told the shocked audience: “There’s a mistake. Moonlight you guys won best picture. This is not a joke, Moonlight you won best picture. Moonlight best picture.” Horowitz added: “This is no joke I’m afraid they read the wrong thing.” Horowitz then held up a card towards the camera showing Moonlight had won best picture.
As La La Land’s crew cleared the stage, Beatty explained what happened: “I’ll tell you what happened. “I opened the envelope and it said ‘Emma Stone La La Land’ that’s why I took such a long look at Faye and then you. I wasn’t trying to be funny. This is Moonlight, best picture.”
In another turn of events, Emma Stone said she had the card in her hand the whole time, saying “We’re all so excited for ‘Moonlight.’ I think it’s one of the best films of all time, so I was pretty beside myself.” She added: “I also was holding my best actress in a leading role card [from the envelope] that entire time.”
To clarify, there are always two sets of envelopes at the Academy Awards: The PriceWaterhouseCoopers accountants bring two briefcases, then stand backstage, one on each side of the stage. They hand the envelopes to the presenter’s right before they go onto the stage. The craziest Oscars blip yet? We think it could be!
