No.1’s Nadine Hawkins gets a little bit Sinatra with Radio Clyde’s answer to the Rat Pack, and
hit the Alea Casino in Glasgow for some gossip and gambling.....
No.1 eventually gave in to the demands and bribery from Radio Presenters Boogie and Dingo who rule the airwaves on Forth 1 and Radio Clyde. The boys had begged No.1 to do a glamorous photo shoot that would rival Hello’s so we agreed that if they brought along Radio Clyde’s Romeo then we had a deal!
Boogie and Dingo have presented Forth 1’s Breakfast Show for over three years and have recently started doing Saturday mornings on Clyde 1. Romeo presents the evening show since joining Clyde on work experience five years ago. We took them to the Casino to get the lowdown from the Radio Clyde Rat Pack....
Dingo, that’s a rather strong Australian accent – how did you end up in Scotland?
I’m originally from Australia and worked all over as a Sound Engineer. I decided to come to Scotland to work on a three-month contract at Forth and five years later I am still here – and married! I love living in Scotland – obviously the weather could be a lot better but I love the people. The Scottish sense of humour is spot on! And obviously Boogie is here too...
What’s your biggest on air faux pas?
Boogie: Gina Mackay and I were presenting at Live 8, we were waiting on our countdown to when we would go live. We were having a moan about how wet and muddy it was and I was laughing at Gina as she had on white trousers. She swore as she discovered a fairly large mud stain at the same time I was in the middle of saying, ‘I wonder when we are on’ and heard a voice in my ear saying ‘you have been live for the past 60
seconds’!
Dingo: I once burst into the studio when I slept in and was explaining how I had slept through my alarm, rather colourfully shall we say, when I realised we were live.
Romeo: I did an interview a couple of weeks ago with the singer Sam Sparro. I had just finished playing a Jack Johnson song and went to Sam and without thinking I called him Jack Sparrow like the character in Pirates of the Carribean – despite me trying all week to keep both names apart! Although I would say the most embarrassing thing was when Clyde sent me to the SECC Carnival and one of the rides catapulted me into the air and I was screaming at the top of my lungs like a little girl – begging the guys to bring me back down!
Romeo, you have a really wide age range tuning in do you think that the way we listen to radio is evolving?
Definitely. My show is really interactive and we obviously have people listening but we have a huge number of listeners who email, call and text in. I think considering the popularity of social
networking sites such as Bebo and Facebook makes the web an excellent way for us to interact with our audience. We have also set up profiles on Bebo and between Suzie and I we have had over 20,000 people join. I really enjoy being on in the evening as it attracts such a varied
listenership – we have kids that are meant to be doing their homework, people on nightshift,
parents who have just put their kids to bed etc.
What would you say was your career highlight?
Boogie: KYLIE!
Dingo: Oh God like we haven’t heard this before...
Boogie: I sang a duet with Kylie – we sang Kids I totally slaughtered it and she just laughed
hysterically.
Romeo: I loved it when Suzie and I went to Durban to do the show from there, although it was a best and worst experience as our suitcases got lost for four days. It was okay for Suzie, she did quite well – every morning she went on the hunt for all the necessities, chapping up all the other rooms looking for straightners, lip gloss etc, but I had the same pants on for four days as we were in the middle of nowhere and we couldn’t get to the shops!
What’s it like working with Suzie, Romeo?
I love working with her, we are great friends.
She really is an inspiration and a bit of a
nutcase.
Who is the biggest diva?
Boogie and Dingo: Definitely Gavin
Pearson! He demands vases of lilies,
mineral water and even whale music!
And finally Romeo, where do you
see yourself in five years time?
At the age I’m at, I am really loving what
I am doing and I enjoy working with
everyone at Clyde. It’s a great team so
I think I will be here a while yet!
