Enrique Iglesias: ‘I was never good with girls in high school’

IN:DEMAND’S Romeo catches up with Enrique Iglesias to find out about the upcoming tour, new album and how he celebrates Valentine’s Day

Enrique first appeared on our radar’s back in 1999 when he released his first album in English, Enrique. Since then the sexy Spanish star has produced some of the finest pop tracks of the last decade and has dueted with such pop royalty as Kelis, Akon and Nicole Scherzinger. Now it looks like Enrique has come up trumps again with his latest album Euphoria.

You must have some intense female fans, have you ever had a scary encounter?
No, sometimes it gets crazy but I love my fans. That’s what makes it exciting, you never know who to expect, it’s quite intriguing. I’ve got a great job! I still can’t believe that I have people that buy my music and come to my concerts, it’s the best feeling in the world!

You have quite a wide age range of fans, do you find a lot of them are younger now?
Yeah you see it at the concerts. I’m actually starting to see more guys too which is cool. I think that the clever guys are starting to go to the concerts because they know they can get a date there! The ratio is like 70% girls to 30% guys at my concert, in a club it’s usually 70% guys and 30% girls! But there are all different ages, from five to 85!

So your tour is the place to go if you’re a single guy looking to meet a future love?
It is the place if you want to find your next date! Even if you hate my music you’re going to find a date!

There is, of course, only one lady in your life…?
There are several ladies in my life; my sisters, my mum…

Is there any plan to settle down and get married?
For me it would be more important to have children at some point in my life than to get married. I see myself being a father in probably 10 to 15 years from now, my grandfather had kids in his 80s! I would like to be a father at some point but not right now. That, for me, is more important than marriage.

It’s nearly Valentine’s Day, have you got any tips for the guys?
I’m probably the worst person to ask! I was never good with the girls in high school or college! I don’t even celebrate it. I think it’s an overrated day and people just want to make a lot of money on flowers! It is good that there’s a day that couples get together but I think that every day should be a day to enjoy your partner!

The new single ‘Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)’ is quite different for you?
It is, it’s probably the most house-style track I’ve ever done but that’s what I love about it. I love the beat and the melody, it’s one of those catchy songs. It breaks a little bit with what I’ve done in the past and I like that it does that. I truly love it! When I listen to it I’m like, ‘Oh my God this is prefect for the show!’ I can’t wait to perform it live.

Was it Ludacris that wrote the song for you?
No, I called Ludacris once I’d heard the song. I’ve always wanted to work with Ludacris and I thought this was the perfect song so I sent it to him and he was like, ‘Yeah I like this, let’s do it!’ So we got together and shot the video. He’s a great guy. I love it when you meet someone who’s a big star but who is still humble, down to earth and easy to work with.

The video for ‘Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)’ is very sexy, was it fun to make?
The director wanted to create a guy’s fantasy, they were good guys to work with! I got to go to Cabo in Mexico to shoot it and it’s one of my favourite places in the world. Cabo is really tranquil and so beautiful. Mexico is a paradise.

In the video you get caught cheating, have you ever been in that situation?
No, of course not!

Are you coming to Scotland on your tour?
All the venues in Scotland are booked all the time! I’ve only cancelled one concert in my whole career and it was in Scotland because I got really, really sick in Glasgow and I cancelled the first date. I had really bad flu. I want to go back but it’s not easy because the venues are always booked. I’m trying to fix it for May though, hopefully on my birthday which is in May.

What song are you most looking forward to performing live on the tour?
I think ‘Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)’ will be fun but ‘I Like It’ has such a great energy, there’s something about that song and it is so much fun to perform live.
