‘I just want to have fun!’
At the age of 19, this Warrington lass is taking on the world of music proving that she really does have the X factor, as In:Demand’s Romeo finds out
The 2008 series of The X Factor has proved to be one of the most successful to date – and not just for the winner. Runners-up JLS have girls screaming up and down the country and now it looks like Diana Vickers – who came fourth on the show – is setting the music world alight too.
At only 19, and with a number one album and single under her belt, Diana is making waves in the music industry and has also got the attention of the fashion world with her quirky sense of style.
With her usual enthusiasm and upbeat nature, Diana chatted with In:Demand’s Romeo about everything from T in the Park to her tactical search for ‘Mr Right’.
Have you dried out from T in the Park yet?
I have – just about! It was a very very wet day!
But that didn’t dampen your performance or anyone’s spirits though!
No it did not. I had such a ball that day. It was fantastic – just an amazing crowd and an amazing day, all in all. Very emotional.
Did you get to meet anyone famous there?
No I didn’t. All my gang were at Oxygen the next day so I saw Newton Faulkner, said ‘Hi’ to Kate Nash and I saw people mooching around at that, but I didn’t see anyone at T in the Park. Everyone was hiding indoors because of the torrential rain.
Will you come back to T in the Park though?
I would love to – if it will have me back. I would love to do it again. It was probably the best festival – it was amazing and the crowd was buzzing!
I guess you have been to a festival before, as a punter?
I have once actually. I went to Reading last year when I went to see Florence and the Machine and Kings of Leon. I loved it!
Did you camp?
No I didn’t but I would love to camp! I was working the next day so I couldn’t but I would love to go and get all muddy and kitted up in festival mode!
And not give a toss about anything!
Exactly! It would be amazing – like maybe get a bonfire going with your pals and bond over some good drinks and burgers.
You described T in the Park as, “Oh my actual gosh!” which is one of the best descriptions of it I have ever heard. What else would have to happen to you for you to describe it as, “Oh my actual gosh!”?
It would have to probably be coming face to face with someone like Johnny Depp or Caleb from Kings of Leon or Aaron Johnson or Jude Law and then kissing one of them!
Who do you think would be the better kisser?
Oh I reckon it would be Johnny Depp because he has been in so many movies and got to kiss so many women that he has probably had to work on his technique.
On Facebook, you popped up as a suggested friend. I have got Diana Vickers the band page and another Diana Vickers with 271 friends. That’s not me! It’s fake and a phony – don’t trust them.
Right, I’ll remove that from my friend list then. Leon Jackson was a friend in common so I thought it must be the real you, but it’s not! On your other one, you have got nearly as many friends as Kylie Minogue.
I know, I heard that – that’s really cool.
Are you her friend on Facebook?
No I have no friends on Facebook – I’m a loner.
What do you ask for in your rider?
Just some Dairy Milk and some Diet Coke and I’m sorted. And some honey as well – and some raisins.
That’s a lot of sugar there. Do you not have a sugar crash when you are on stage?
No because the adrenaline is pumping through my veins!
You played at In:Demand Live recently. Who do you think was the fittest person there – guy or girl?
The Saturdays are pretty hot, Tinchy – he’s a dude – he’s pretty hot. The JLS boys are hot – everyone’s hot. There was going to be a fire!
Your new single – out now – is called The Boy Who Murdered Love. Who was this boy?
It wasn’t any boy in particular. It’s just about relationships and when you are in lust or in love with someone – and the love is such an amazing thing – and then they break your heart and ruin the whole concept of love. It just becomes some hurtful, horrible, depressing thing that you don’t want to ever think about ever again. But then, a couple of weeks later, you are onto the next thing and think that love’s amazing again and the vicious circle begins again.
I’m hearing as well that you have no time for boys just now?
Yeah not right now. I mean if one comes along sometime soon, then I’m sure I will make time but I am having so much fun right now in my career and I’m working so hard at the moment that I haven’t really got any time to myself. I am having so much fun that I am being a bit selfish really and enjoying it all. You are only young once and you never know when it is all going to slip through your fingers so you have just got to really enjoy it as much as you can.
Say you decided you did want a little romance, or a little love interest, would you go for someone who is a star themselves?
I don’t know – it’s really hard to say. I probably would like to date someone in the same business just to see what it’s like, because I never have before. I could date someone who is in the business and someone who isn’t and see what works best. You never know until you try!
I like your thinking Diana: try one but nothing in life is forever so try someone else!
Exactly – you’re young! It’s good being 19.
