No.1 for Interviews - The Saturdays
The Saturdays

Ricky Whittle ‘The Scots are crazy, they’re a bad influence on me’Young, gorgeous and with the world at their feet, you would hate this girl band – if they weren’t so bloomin’ nice…

To drive the market forward, healthy competition is essential. So it was only a matter of time until Girls Aloud’s monopoly of the charts came to an end. And who was responsible for this? The Saturdays, that’s who.

Since storming the charts with ‘If This Is Love’, ‘Up’ and many more dance floor fillers, Mollie, Frankie, Rochelle, Vanessa and Una have given Cheryl et al a run for their money. Life in Britain’s hottest girl band (sorry Girls Aloud) is pretty
non-stop so No.1 caught up with Mollie on a quick break from rehearsals for their forthcoming show at Hamilton Park Racecourse. Ultra polite and very well spoken, Mollie spills the beans on how she looks so good (and still eats chocolate everyday – is there no justice in this world?) and her band mates’ famous boyfriends.

You have travelled all over the world with the band. Where is your favourite place to play?
I do love coming up north because the crowds are really loud and vibrant. They always know all the words to songs and sing along to everything. We have been to Asia as well and that was really cool. I was actually really surprised that they knew us over there.

I love it everywhere. In London it’s great because that is when my family can come and watch so that’s pretty special as well.

The last three years have been a roller coaster for you guys. What has been your best moment?
Oh I don’t know! Doing the Comic Relief single was really good, because such huge people have done it before and it’s such a huge compliment to be asked to do it. Playing at the O2 was also really good. We supported Take That, which was really cool because we were playing stadiums. I liked that; it was amazing being on stage in front of so many people.

Do you still get nervous?
Sometimes, yeah, but I get more nervous if I am doing a new dance routine and I feel like I don’t know it. The size of the crowd doesn’t make me nervous but the set we are doing does.

When the band started, did you think it would become as big as it has?
I always hoped it would – it was what I had always dreamt of. There are so many girl bands that are put together and that never work out so we are very lucky and we are all very grateful that we have good people around us and that it is all working out.

You must be having so much fun?
Oh my god, so much fun.

If you weren’t in the band, what would you be doing?
I really don’t know because this is what I had my heart set on since I was about six and I never thought about anything else. I guess if I had to do something else, I might have carried on skiing because I used to ski for the country.

Do you still ski?
I’m not really allowed to because of the insurance but when we get a week off I might sneak off and not tell anyone.

It must be hard to do anything in secret! How have you adjusted to the media’s interested in your private life?
It’s kind of funny because fame happened gradually for us. It wasn’t like we went on The X Factor and all of a sudden we were massive.

As we go further and further on the media is getting a bit more intrigued and I do find that quite hard sometimes. They sleep outside my flat sometimes and when you go outside in the morning it’s horrible because you really don’t want to have your photo taken.

It is hard sometimes because you don’t always look your best but the papers have been quite kind to us up until now so I hope they don’t turn on us.

Do you feel under pressure to look good all the time?
There is a pressure but to be honest, I think every girl feels there is a pressure to look good even if it’s at school or at work. Everyone feels a pressure to look good as they can. Rather than stressing about looking amazing, I just want to look the best that I can. It’s just little things like trying to work out when I can and not eat too much rubbish – I am quite bad for that.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate. I have to have a chocolate bar everyday. It’s quite bad but I just have to.

Do you go to the gym or does dancing keep you fit enough?
I think it’s down to dancing really. I go to the gym every now and then. I have a personal trainer so I see him as much as I can but it’s hard to fit it in.

How do you keep your energy up when you’re touring?
I try to get an early night if I can because I find that if I don’t get enough sleep I really suffer for it. It’s just about sleeping when you can: in the car or just wherever we can. Whenever we get a spare five minutes we just nap off.

When you are all feeling grumpy and tired, do you ever fall out with each other?
No. I mean we are lucky because we do actually get on. When it comes to that time when we are feeling ratty and tired we don’t wind each up. It’s just time to stick your iPod on and chill out rather than start an argument, but we are very lucky with that. I think a lot of people would assume that we don’t get on but it’s just not like that.

What kind of music do you listen to in your spare time?
I love pop music but I also like acoustic guitar. I love Paolo Nutini and I like John Mayer. I love Britney and Justin and that kind of stuff.

Are you under pressure from Rochelle and Frankie to listen to JLS and McFly [of which their boyfriends are members]?
I actually like their music but I think the girls think I am a bit of a saddo when they can hear me listen to ‘Beat Again’ on my iPod. It’s a bit cringy!

There are constant comparisons made between you and Girls Aloud. Are you flattered to be compared to them?
Absolutely. I had grown up loving Girls Aloud so the moment somebody said that I was like, ‘It’s so cool’. I just thought it was a huge compliment.

Do you get on well with them?
Yeah we went on tour with them so we do know them quite well. I wouldn’t exactly call them up for a chat but if I saw them out, I would definitely hang out with them.
