He presents Radio 1’s high profile drive-time show, had a musical at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe and is truly living the dream – he is friends with David Hasselhoff after all…
For Scott Mills, being a radio DJ isn’t just a job, it is a calling and something he has dreamed about since he was a child. Now, not only has the dream become a reality but he has become the second most highly rated DJ on Radio 1, after Chris Moyles. The 35-year-old recently came north of the border for The Edinburgh Festival Fringe – and not just to observe. Getting up to his usual radio high-jinx, Scott and his team decided to turn an internet rumour that he was making a musical for The Fringe into a reality.
We caught up with him to see who really got the last laugh…
You recently brought your show, Scott Mills The Musical, to The Fringe. How did that come about?
It started about four or five months ago. There was this rumour going about that I was going to do a musical, which wasn’t true. We thought, ‘Actually, that’s quite a good idea.’ We try to do something big on my show every year; last year we had cameras in my house for a week on a thing called ‘Scott Cam’, which was like Big Brother. We were like, ‘How are we going to top that?’ We thought a musical would be fun.
Even though it started off as a joke, were you nervous about the reviews?
We were expecting really bad reviews but they’ve all been amazing. We weren’t expecting that in anyway – I couldn’t have asked for anything more really.
You play David Hasselhoff in the musical and are good friends with him in real life. How did that happen?
About three years ago he had this song out called Jump In My Car. We managed to do an on-air campaign and got it to number three in the charts, which is his only UK hit, although he’s had loads in Germany. He was really grateful for that because number three is big for him. He came onto my show and we’ve stayed in touch ever since.
What do you and the Hoff do together?
Well in January I went to live with him for four days in Los Angeles and filmed it and it was shown on Living TV. A month ago I spent three weeks with him in the UK and went around Britain, only it was me showing him around this time.
Where did you take him?
We went to Devon so he could run along the beach, Baywatch-style. We went to a haunted house in Derby and an agricultural show in Peterborough, which was really weird: we had to herd pigs together. I didn’t go to this one, but he did come up and stay in the Highlands. He loved it and did all the traditional things like he got a kilt made and wore it a lot...
Did he do any Highland dancing? What a vision...
I’ve seen him morris dance, so anything’s possible…
Other than the Hoff, who is your best showbiz mate?
I don’t really have any showbiz mates. I know lots of people but they are not the people I hang out with a lot, they are just kind of work friends.
Do you tend to stay out of the media spotlight?
I do because it scares me a little bit. I’m only a little bit famous, which is quite good. You can still go out and about or take your bins out and nobody cares.
What do you like so much about you job?
It’s what I’ve always wanted to do for as long as I can remember. I’ve wanted to be on Radio 1 since I was four: it’s really been that long. I got my first radio job when I was 16 and I just worked and worked at it really. I can’t imagine doing anything else; it’s my dream job I’m doing now.
If you weren’t on the radio, what would you be doing?
I would probably work in the media somewhere, perhaps in the record industry. It’s never presented itself to me as a problem because I have never done anything else but it does scare me.
What can we expect from the Scott Mills Show in the future?
Just for my show to keep doing as well as it is. I am having the best time and would like it to continue as long as it can.
