Kate Ford

After enthralling the nation with her bad girl roles, Kate took time out to have her first child. Now she’s back and telling No.1 all about how she dropped those pesky pregnancy pounds

Kate Ford became a familiar face after her show-stealing performance as Tracy Barlow on much-loved soap Coronation Street. Stirring up trouble wherever she went, Tracy was a character we all loved to hate and playing her won Kate a whole host of awards.
Since leaving the show 32-year-old Kate has gone on to get married and have her first child. Here she tells No.1 her secret to losing a reported four stone and getting her pre-pregnancy body back!

You’re best known as bad girl Tracy Barlow in Coronation Street, what have you been up to since we saw you on screen last?
I had my baby! I did my Blue Murder thing and then I found out I was pregnant. I wanted to take a year out to spend time with the baby. So I’ve been keeping myself busy being a mum. He’s a year old now so I‘m looking forward to getting back to work now.

How was it going from such a grueling soap schedule to being a full-time mum?
I swapped one full-time job for another! It’s so tiring – but it’s more physically tiring rather than mentally tiring like it was with the acting work.

What made you decide to take the year out from acting?
I wanted to spend time with my son because you can’t get that time back. That time between zero and one – I just wanted to have that time with him really. I loved it!

Where you worried about putting on weight when you were pregnant with your son?
No I didn’t worry about it when I was pregnant – I just wanted the baby to be healthy. So I went with what wanted – I indulged my cravings, within reason… I didn’t go mad! I was conscious of the fact that the more you put on the longer it’s going to take to get back to what you used to look like. I wanted to spend six months with the baby not worrying about what I looked like, so I didn’t want to start dieting. I don’t believe in dieting anyway. As soon as I had my baby I wanted to concentrate on him. But after six months I felt like I wanted to get back to how I looked pre-pregnancy.

Do you think there is too much pressure on mum’s in the public eye to snap back into shape weeks after giving birth?
I think it’s absolutely ridiculous! It’s hard enough having a baby – you’ve got your sleepless nights and you’ve got all of the life changes. The last thing you need to be doing is obsessing about your weight at that point. I think you just need to be kind to yourself. I mean you can do it eventually but there is no rush.

You look great now. How did you lose your baby weight? Do you have a secret technique?
Well I’ve been doing this thing called MagnaSlim, which was sent for me to try, and I really liked it. It’s a magnet that you put on your wrist and it works on an acupressure point called Pericardium-6. It works by stimulating your serotonin levels. What I felt it did was make me less tired. I felt less cranky and less inclined to reach for sugary things. I wasn’t conscious of dieting – I just seemed to make better food choices.  It’s not an overnight, ‘Oh my goodness I’m really skinny and a week’s gone by’ type of moment. It just works in time... you seem to be getting back to your old self and eating better.

So there is no crash dieting involved?
No crash dieting – no dieting at all really. I am not a fan of dieting. It’s more like a healthy eating thing. If I went to the supermarket I found myself reaching for fresh food. Instead of going for the cakes and sweets I’d be heading towards the fish and fruit. I didn’t crave cigarettes either. Before I would like one or two a day but with this I realised – I just wasn’t that bothered!

Do you think this is a long-term solution for weight-loss?
I think what it does is just change your perspective on stuff. So you might use it for a while and start eating healthier food and then you could take it off for a break. You don’t have to wear the magnet forever – you wear it for as long as you need it really. If you feel you’ve got PMT you can wear it because of the way it works with the serotonin. It’s more of a mood enhancer than a diet aid – it’s more about well-being.

Had you tried anything before MagnaSlim to lose weight?
No I have never ever believed in dieting. However, after having the baby and six months going by, I did need to do something because it is difficult – the weight doesn’t come off all that easily. I didn’t want to be on a diet so this helped – I just swapped what I was eating. I would have fruit rather than cakes, and stopped drinking cappuccinos. It also really stopped me craving things like sugar.

How you noticed changes in your body since you starting using the magnets?
Oh yes. I’m back to my pre-pregnancy weight. It’s been five months. I walk a lot and eat well and that in combination with the MagnaSlim worked. It’s just about looking after yourself.

Did you feel under pressure to stay slim when you were on Coronation Street?
When you’re on TV you have to be realistic – you do need to watch your weight. But I never wanted to calorie count – I felt really resentful of the whole dieting thing. But with MagnaSlim you just eat better and after a while you realise you feel better and don’t want to go back to eating all that stuff because it doesn’t make you feel good.

What are your plans for the future – do you have anything lined up?
Not really no. I’ve only just got back into it. I’m just going to see what happens. I’m excited to get back into work though, so I’m just waiting to see what my next move is!
