Phelps apologises

The golden boy of the Olympics - nicknamed The Dolphin for his unbelievable swimming skills was hit with scandal this weekend.

The champion won an astounding eight gold medals for his impressive pool prowess, but his dedication to training and healthy living has relaxed somewhat - and now seems to allow cannabis!

The 23-year-old was pictured looking like he was perhaps smoking the drug from a bong and his people quickly issued the following statement:

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

No word yet whether he will receive a ban.
