Don't blame religion

The sad and sudden death of John Travolta's son Jett left many in the acting community shocked. And, by and large the public feeling was one of sympathy. However, once again Scientology has been implicated in the tragedy.

Forever getting a bad rap as a 'cult', Scientology has mostly been linked to TomKat and their seemingly odd relationship and behaviour. But John Travolta and wife Kelly are also long time followers of the religion – which has been rumoured to frown upon certain medications, particularly those for metal illness.

So when John's son Jett died of a seizure whilst on holiday with his family in the Bahamas there were questions about his medical care. The teenager had been diagnosed with Kawasaki disease and many media outlets reported that his treatment for the disease was limited because of Scientology beliefs. However, this has been strongly denied, as the church claims the only medications it is opposed to are 'uppers and downers' such as anti-depressants, and that normal medication for illness and disease is permitted and encouraged.

To back these claims up, another staunch Scientology follower LIsa Marie Presley wrote on her blog, "Just like anyone else, If one is sick , they go to the doctor, If a medication will make it better then they take it. If they don't then they are an idiot and you can't blame their religion. Whatever medical and or physical condition Jett had, I can tell you first hand that his parents were on a tireless, never ending quest to get and provide him with the absolute best care anyone could ever ask for and need, Medically, physically, emotionally, medicinally and spiritually."

John and Kelly have not yet addressed the claims of limited medication because of Scientology publicly.

Why do people craw out of the woodwork after such a sad event, they never spoke out while he was alive , why hurt someone more when they are at the lowest pointy in there lives the loss of a child breaks your heart and soul, and you do blame yourself even if no blame is on you, leave them alone and let them grieve in peace. its a wound that takes a long time to heal. Rest in Peace Jett and my sincere condolences to the family

I find the tone of your article quite odd. "Forever getting a bad rap as a 'cult'" seems to indicate that you think no such thing, and the use of the word 'church' later on seems to bea this out. Scientology is most definitely a cult - it is not an established religion, being set up in the 1950s by a science fiction writer (L Ron Hubbard), who was on record as saying that one of the few ways of making money was to start up a religion. It has come into conflict with the government and police forces of several countries, has been linked with several deaths, and requires substantial payments from adherents both directly and for dubious courses, books and other paraphernalia. There is absolutely no doubt that scientology is a cult, and a dangerous one at that; to suggest otherwise is irresponsible journalism. Having said that, I agree with the previous correspondent; harping on about a person's religion when they've just lost their child is ghoulish. No matter how dubious it is, I hope that the family gain some consolation from their beliefs.

Leave them to grieve in peace. I also agree that scientology is a cult and not a religion and people should be aware of its odd practices

I think there is often no smoke without fire and the secrecy surrounding Scientology is most unsettling. However I feel the need to point out to Shy Wallflower that I have a distant cousin who follows the religion and it is referred to as a church. But that is not the important thing here, John's child has just died - blaming his religion/cult whatever it is is so sad and is the last thing they need to hear. I hope they pay no attention to the rumours.
