And he's out!

After unwittingly creating a media storm, the unlikely favourite to win Strictly Come Dancing has spectacularly quit the show.

The former broadcaster found himself saved by the public vote week after week, even though he was often given the lowest scores in the show's history by judges, Craig Revel Horwood, Arlene Phillips, Len Goodman and Brunio Tonioli.

The 64-year-old struggled with the complicated dance moves he had to perform with partner Kristina Rihanoff (pictured right). But was continuously saved by the public. The reasons for the huge public backing are varied, one voter stated "why is it so hard to believe that the British public have a sense of humour?" Whilst another said, "he's an old man who was bullied by the judges, I voted for him to teach those nasty judges a lesson and to show support for the underdog."

However, it seems the strain of being caught in the middle of such a furore became too much for Sergeant and he held a press conference yesterday to announce he had quit the competition. During the press conference he said, "The reasons for leaving – well it is like when do you leave a party? You leave before the fighting starts and I think that is what has happened on this occasion. We had fun dancing and dancing is a wonderfully enjoyable thing, but if the joke wears thin, if people begin to take things very seriously and if people are getting so wound up that is very difficult to carry on the joke, then it is time to go."

What do you think about all this - was he right to quit?
